Atmospheric Effects of Magnetosheath Jets

چکیده

We report effects in the upper high-latitude atmosphere related to interaction of fast magnetosheath plasma streams, so-called jets, with dayside magnetopause. The jets were observed by THEMIS mission magnetosphere during a quiet day on 12 July 2009. It was found that jet accompanied strong localized compression and penetration suprathermal inside magnetosphere. caused prominent magnetic variations amplitudes up 100 nT ground-based networks SuperMAG CARISMA. also visible geomagnetic Dst AE indices. resulted intense precipitation ions energies < 10 keV energetic electrons > 30 low-altitude NOAA/POES satellites wide longitudinal range. precipitations produced enhancements ionization an amplitude ~1 TECU (~30% relative units) intensification ionospheric E F1 layers as FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC misson. enhanced might affect radio communication navigation regions. These results provide new insight into contribution magnetospheric forcing day-to-day variability.

Chaos in atmospheric-pressure plasma jets

We report detailed characterization of a low-temperature atmosphericpressure plasma jet that exhibits regimes of periodic, quasi-periodic and chaotic behaviors. Power spectra, phase portraits, stroboscopic section and bifurcation diagram of the discharge current combine to comprehensively demonstrate the existence of chaos, and this evidence is strengthened with a nonlinear dynamics analysis us...

On the generation of magnetosheath high-speed jets by bow shock ripples

[1]The terrestrial magnetosheath is embedded with coherent high-speed jets of about 1RE in scale, predominantly during quasi-radial interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). When these high dynamic pressure (Pdyn) jets hit the magnetopause, they cause large indentations and further magnetospheric effects. The source of these jets has remained controversial. One of the proposed mechanisms is based on...

High Energy Jets in the Earth’s Magnetosheath: Implications for Plasma Dynamics and Anomalous Transport

593 The region downstream of a supercritical collisionless shock, the magnetosheath (MSH), is known to be in a highly disturbed turbulent state [1–3]. The undisturbed solar wind (SW) streams with supermagnetosonic velocity V > c ms at a magnetosonic Mach number up to M ms ~ 15. At the Earth’s bow shock (BS), the SW decelerates to Mach numbers M ms < 1, thermalizes, and, when entering the MSH, i...

Searching for order in atmospheric pressure plasma jets

The self-organized discharge behaviour occurring in a non-thermal radio-frequency plasma jet in rare gases at atmospheric pressure was investigated. The frequency of the azimuthal rotation of filaments in the active plasma volume and their inclination were measured along with the gas temperature under varying discharge conditions. The gas flow and heating were described theoretically by a three...

Helium atmospheric pressure plasma jets touching dielectric and metal surfaces

Atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) are being investigated in the context plasma medicine and biotechnology applications, and surface functionalization. The composition of the surface being treated ranges from plastics, liquids, and biological tissue, to metals. The dielectric constant of these materials ranges from as low as 1.5 for plastics to near 80 for liquids, and essentially infinit...
